Hotel Near Pai Big Buddha (Wat Phra That Mae Yen)

In short

The Big Buddha — the white Buddha of Wat Phra That Mae Yen — sits on a hill about 2 km east of Pai town, up a staircase of 353 steps. The closest stays are in and around the centre: The Arch Casa in town, Betel Palm Village just outside it, and Eden Villa a short ride away. All three put the staircase within a few minutes' ride. The white Buddha on the hill

Wat Phra That Mae Yen — the Big Buddha — is the huge white seated Buddha you can see from almost anywhere in Pai, watching over the valley from a hilltop about 2 km east of town. It's the town's most visible landmark and one of its best free viewpoints.

The Buddha faces west, out over the whole Pai valley, which makes late afternoon the magic hour: the light falls on the statue and the valley glows below. Entry is free — donations welcome — and the site is generally open through daylight hours.

It's a working temple, so dress modestly: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off at the top. Sarongs are usually available to borrow or rent at the bottom of the stairs if you've come straight from a waterfall.

353 steps, or the easy way up

The classic approach is the staircase — 353 steps flanked by naga serpents. It sounds worse than it is: most people are up in 15–20 minutes with a couple of pauses, and the view unfolds behind you as you climb.

If stairs aren't your thing, there's also a road that winds up the back, so you can ride a scooter most of the way and walk only the final stretch. That makes the viewpoint genuinely accessible for almost everyone.

Bring water, and in hot weather bring socks — shoes come off at the top and the tiles get hot underfoot by midday.

Where to base yourself for it

The Buddha is on the east side of the Pai river, just past the edge of town — which means the central stays are the closest. The Arch Casa, our design hotel in the centre, puts you about five minutes' ride from the bottom of the staircase; Betel Palm Village is a calm villa cluster just outside the centre, and Eden Villa is a private two-bedroom garden villa a short ride away.

Honestly, no hotel sits at the foot of the stairs — the hill rises straight out of countryside — so 'near the Big Buddha' really means 'in or near town', and that's where our three central stays are.

Sunset on the steps, dinner in town

The move our guests love: ride over in the last hour of light, climb as the heat fades, and watch the sun drop behind the mountains from beside the Buddha. Because town is only a couple of kilometres away, you're down the steps and at the night market before the food stalls hit their stride.

That's the quiet advantage over Pai Canyon's sunset — no 8 km ride home in the dark, just a few easy minutes back to a central room.

It also pairs well with a slow morning: some guests climb at dawn instead, when the air is cool and the valley is misty in the cool season, then roll back for breakfast at a café in town.
